Road Bike Maintenance Tips

If you have a road bike you must perform the proper bicycle maintenance to ensure the safety and longevity of the bicycle. In order for your road bike to operate properly, and be safe to ride, it needs maintenance just as a car needs maintenance.

The very first thing to consider when doing road bike maintenance is the size of the bike you are riding. Make sure that you and your bicycle match in size. It is dangerous to ride a bicycle that is far too big or too small for your body size.

Tires and Rims

Unlike a car most bicyclist do not have the ability to carry spare rims and tires, therefore your tires and rims must be in good condition before you leave home for a ride. Visually check the condition of the tires. Look for spots that are worn or damaged. Check the air pressure, if the tire is low find out why the tire has lost air. If you find a leak you will need to repair the leak or replace the tire. The next thing on our list are the rims. Check the rims for damage and check each spoke.

If you have a bike with coaster brakes there is not any maintenance to complete other than making sure the brakes work. With hand brakes there are many things to check. Press on the brake handles one at a time. Make sure the brakes stop the bicycle by grabbing the rim and not the tire. If the brakes grab the tire you will need to make an immediate adjustment as this can ruin the tire. Make sure that all brake pads are in good condition. While you are checking all of the other brake components check the brake cables. If any cables show signs of wear replace them as soon as possible.

The Chain

Check the chain for dirt and debris. If anything is present clean it out of the chain. Keep the chain properly oiled, if it becomes dried out it can cause a lot of problems. You should oil your chain every 100 to 200 miles of riding. If you ride in dusty conditions you may need to oil it more often.

Other things to Check

If your road bicycle has multiple gears you will want to keep the derailer(s) in good condition. You can do this by keeping them clean and oiled. Make sure all safety devices are in place, working, and being used and that your bike seat saddle is secure. All guards, reflectors, and lights must be in place and in good working condition. Make sure that you carry a first aid kit, air pump, patch kit for the tires, and some basic tools while you are riding. There are many different bicycle saddle bags on the market so that will allow you can carry these essential items while you ride.
